Umpire Information
Development Program
2007
JD Clinic Information
Location: Pickering Recreation Complex
Date: Saturday, April 21st from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..
Pickering Softball has commenced recruitment of umpires for the 2007season. This is a paid position. If you are interested in umpiring, please click here and complete our electronic sign up document.
Note: All carded umpires must register by purchasing the 2007 exam, which includes insurance coverage, before umpiring. All carded umpires are expected to complete and successfully pass their test by June 15th.
Pickering Softball operates with three sets of league rules.
T-Ball has rules orientated for the development of new to Softball players. Umpires are not used within T Ball.
There is a separate set of rules for Coach /Friendly Pitch which contain amendments particular to each division. Players in Coach Pitch and Friendly Pitch use significantly modified Softball rules, which will aid in the
development of the understanding of the game (without strikes and balls). Given the many differences to actual Softball rules,
they operate under a different set of rules. Umpires handling these two
divisions have the option to wear protective equipment (eg: mask) as the game is
handled with umpire positioning similar to slow pitch (umpire stands to the side
of the batter, not behind the catcher).
Mite-Squirt through Bantam-Midget operate under more traditional Softball rules (strikes and balls). Obviously there are differences between each division as they become more mature (eg: Infield Fly, Dropped third strike, base distances
etc.). Umpires for these divisions must wear full protective equipment.
To
assist umpires in better understanding the key differences in rules within each
division covered, there are two charts (aka rule matrices).
These matrices will be updated prior to the start of the 2007 season.
The
first matrix outlines Mite-Squirt through Bantam-Midget rule differences and can
be accessed by clicking here: Senior Division Matrix.
The
second matrix outlines rule differences between Coach Pitch and Friendly Pitch, called Junior Division Matrix.
